Studies in the Metabolic Changes Induced by Administration of Guanidine Bases

چکیده
Paton and Findlay (I) confirmed the results of former workers in a series of critical investigations, in which they found that true tetany developed only after complete parathyroidectomy and that when one external parathyroid was left with its blood supply intact, no symptoms, or at most transient tremors, appear. Many hypotheses concerning the cause of tetany have been proposed, especially from the standpoint of parathyreopriva. One states that the lack of the parathyroid produces a toxic substance in the body, or the normal function of this gland is to neutralize the toxins formed during normal metabolism. The other concerns the deficiency of some essential substance in the blood and tissues, especially calcium, which exerts an inhibition on the hyperexcitability of the nerves. It is well known that injection of calcium salts removes the symptoms for a time, but that bleeding and transfusion of saline solution (2, 3) and that bleeding followed by injection of an indifferent solution free from calcium (Ringer’s solution) (4) have the same effect. These facts seem to point out that the Ca deficiency is not the true cause. Beebe’s experiments in which he reduced the symptoms by injection of the extracts of parathyroids (5) and of the nucleoprotein of parathyroids (6), lead us to believe that the symptoms are due to some poison produced as a consequence of normal metabolism incident to the removal of the parathyroid. Recently Paton and Findlay (7) suggested that in tetany some toxic substances, especially guanidine

Oxidative stress, biochemical alterations, and hyperlipidemia in female rats induced by lead chronic toxicity during puberty and post puberty periods
Objective(s):Lead (Pb) is a toxic metal inducing many destructive effects leading to a broad range of physiological, biochemical, and neurological dysfunctions in humans and laboratory animals. Materials and Methods: Here, we investigated the effect of chronic exposure to Pb (50 mg/l) on oxidative stress, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and lipid profile of two different age groups of female r...
متن کاملCurcumin Ameliorates Aflatoxin-Induced Changes in Caput and Cauda Epididymis of Mice
Background The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the ameliorative effect of curcumin on aflatoxin-induced changes in caput and cauda epididymis of mice. MaterialsAndMethods Aflatoxin was obtained by growing Aspergillus parasiticus in sucrose - magnesium sulphate - potassium nitrate - yeast extract (SMKY) liquid medium. Pure curcumin (97% purity) was purchased from Hi-Media Laborator...
متن کاملThe Modulatory Effects of Pentoxifylline in Biochemical Changes Induced By 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol in the Rat Model
Background: Ethinylestradiol (EE) has induced cholestasis and hepatotoxicity in animal studies through reducing bile acid uptake by hepatocytes and induce of oxidative stress. Pentoxifylline (PTX) is a drug that by inhibition of release or transcription of proinflammatory cytokine cause prevents oxidative stress of liver cell and reduction of damage. We aimed to evaluate the effects of pentoxif...
متن کاملTroxerutin Chronic Treatment Protects against Fructose-induced Metabolic Syndrome in Male Rats
Background and Aims: Metabolic syndrome, a common metabolic disorder, for the serious health consequences such as insulin resistance and lipid abnormalities has been considered as a major clinical challenge with obscure causes. Oxidative stress is an important component of metabolic syndrome, contributing in its development. Troxerutin, a semi-synthetic derivative of natural bioflavonoid rutin,...
متن کاملDiet-induced metabolic syndrome model in rats
Background & Objective: Risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke increases with the number of the metabolic risk factors. In general, a person who has the metabolic syndrome is twice as likely to develop heart disease and five times as likely to develop diabetes as someone who does not have the metabolic syndrome. High-calorie-diet rodent models have contributed significantly to the analysi...
